O: The Power of Submission
The Story of O (or Histoire d’O in its original French) is an enduring classic of BDSM literature, and it has spawned a host of imitators, not to mention plenty of kinksters trying to recreate the earthly paradise of willing female submissives serving their masters at the lavish estate called Roissy. The Story of O has been adapted to film many times over the years, and this most recent version — which combines hot bondage, mind games, and hardcore sex — is one of the most successful. Adaptations of The Story of O basically stand or fall on the strength of the main character, O. This movie has a fantastic O. Carmen Luvana’s breasts alone are more charismatic than the whole bodies of some other porn stars. While she delivers her lines rather woodenly, she doesn’t have much talking to do in this film, and she portrays O’s essential aloofness and reserve beautifully, seeming noble and dignified even when she’s being whipped or fucked in the ass.
The filmmaker, Ernest Greene (husband to Nina Hartley, who does the voiceover narration), actually knows about bondage, and the costuming is wonderful, the whip work is good, and the action is plausible. There’s lots of decent BDSM porn out there, but this is one of the best, combining a classic story with very hot sex. Tommy Gunn’s performance as O’s lover Ray is really fine, and Evan Stone goes from menace to vulnerability as her rather more cruel master Stephen. The bevy of sex slaves, in their collars, restraints, and lingerie, are certainly a feast for the eyes, too. But Luvana is the star here, and she carries the movie. If you like BDSM as much for the narrative and the mind games as for the collars and whips, you’ll love this.
