Ghostlovers
The things you learn from porn. For instance, the chief lesson I took away from Ghostlovers is: Ghosts love anal! Though I also learned that it’s possible to make an entertaining and clever contemporary-fantasy porn movie, which surprised me. I was just praying it wouldn’t be some sort of Ghostbuster parody appearing 20 years too late to be relevant. Instead, I got something sexy and interesting.
In popular novels at the moment there’s a hot sub-genre sometimes called “paranormal romance” or, more colloquially, “vampire shaggers.” These are mostly novels set on versions of contemporary earth where the supernatural is commonplace — everyone knows vampires or werewolves or ghosts or were-jaguars or whatever exist, and people just deal with it. The upshot of the standard plot is, usually, some human getting involved with a supernatural creature and dealing with the complications that come from being basically different species — basic star-crossed-lover stuff, only when the lovers are a vampire and a werewolf, things can get even more crossed than usual. Ghostlovers is set in a similar milieu, where ghosts are commonplace, and most people seem to know somebody who’s been possessed. The ghosts have issues they need to work out, or they’re just pissed-off, or malevolent, or seeking revenge or closure (or one last bout of hot sex). The plot concerns a ghost hunter (Denis Marti), the local hot possessed chick (Claudia Rossi), the ghost (Sarah Twain), and an ancient magical amulet.
Now, I’ll admit the plot doesn’t make a ton of sense, and the fact that none of the main actors appear to speak English as a first language makes it even harder to understand, but there are some clever touches. In all it’s an interesting premise with some hot sex and amusingly cheesy special effects.
