I enjoyed your description of what was, as I wasn't part of that world, and it seems so distant to me that it's difficult for me to comprehend. The personal account kind of brings it home.

I was born in '54, to very young parents. By the time I needed sex education, they were still trying to figure it out themselves. I was very diligent in my research, but it was hard to puzzle-out the mysteries of sexuality all on my own, because there was so little information available. As an adolescent boy, experiencing crushes on boys as well as girls, I actually thought that I was a unique freak, the only dual-oriented person in the world! It was a needlessly painful and lonely time for me. I think I was about 18 before I even learned the word bisexual. Sex is not a "secret" now, as it was when I was a child, and that is a very good thing.

Thanks for this post. You're totally right when you point out that it's very easy to become discouraged and pessimistic about issues such as sexual freedom. Peoples' minds take so long to change... sometimes it seems like all the effort in the world won't even put a dent in the issue. But stepping back to take stock of what's happened already can suddenly throw things into perspective. This little dose of hope was just what I needed.

On a different note, it really is remarkable to see how drastically some of these things have changed in the last forty to fifty years. After all, many of the behaviors or ideas on your list have been taboo (or illegal) for not just years but centuries, even millenia, and yet all it took was fifty years in the modern world to turn those things around? That's really amazing! I'm not sure exactly what it was that allowed sexuality to become so dramatically different, but it doesn't really matter: the point is, things are changing and they're changing fast. If that's not something to be happy about, I don't know what is :)
