Council of Carnality Unlimited

Council of Carnality Unlimited

Ok, so this next comic is totally a guilty pleasure. Council of Carnality Unlimited starts when the student council president, Asuka Shimizu, happens upon the new boy, Satou-Kun, while he’s masturbating in her office. Talk about the student body! She immediately asserts her dominance, making him display himself and toying with his bits until she gets, as they say in porn, a full load in the face. Then they take it to the next level, with her losing her virginity right then and there (yes, in the same scene — he’s all of 18, and you remember those days of short refractory periods, don’t you? Ahhhh). Ahem, where was I? Oh yes, so this is only the plot of the first chapter in this 10 chapter comic, and it just gets naughtier from there. This is H manga, so if you’ve never experienced it before, you should know that you need to read it “backwards”, that is, start from the back and read each page from right to left. Trust me, this adorable, sexy little tale is worth the extra effort!

Decadence: Japanese Fetish Art

Decadence: Japanese Fetish Art

Last week I featured Pink Box, a book of photographs from inside the current Japanese sex industry. But was it always so diverse? So intricate? So different from the clandestine sex industry we know in the west? Fear not, Decadence: Japanese Fetish Art has some answers. A very different book from Pink Box, Decadence focuses on Japanese woodblock art during the Edo period (c. 1600 - 1867), and is a fascinating look at the idealized version of life in the Japanese sex trade during that time (this is what happens when you don’t have cameras to properly document things). The beauty standards of the time are not always what we’re used to today: the elaborate hairstyles, blackened teeth and copious pubic hair might seem novel to a modern observer. There’s an emphasis on the genitals (which are often disproportionately large) and a bit of disturbing violence towards the end, giving validity to the book’s title Decadence. There are even a few modern drawings and photos to show just how far we have (or haven’t, in some cases) come. A truly fascinating glimpse into a very different world.

Borgia: Blood for the Pope

Borgia: Blood for the Pope

When I was a kid, there was one time we got a VHS tape from video store that was supposed to be a movie called Arthur. I’m not sure why my parents popped the tape in and left the room (a quick IMDB search tells me this wasn’t a kid’s movie). Anyway, what came on the screen was something I’ll never forget: instead of a happy alcoholic, there were naked people running through a forest, sex like I’d never seen before, and then a bit of sexual violence the likes of which I’d never even imagined before. The movie was Caligula. My parents came in around the time things were being chopped and immediately stopped the tape, ignoring my cries that I’d never know what happened now, gee, thanks Dad!

You may be wondering, by this point, why I’m telling you this. What I’m trying to explain is why I’m so fascinated by this next comic. Because, honestly, the illustrated retelling of Rodrigo Borgia’s rise to popedom is not your typical subject matter for an erotic comic book. But there’s something undeniably compelling, for some of us, about watching violence mixed in between or with nudity and sex. Borgia: Blood for the Pope is wrought with degenerate sex, gruesome violence and underhanded political scheming. There’s more violence than sex in this book, though some of the nudity is just lovely (it is drawn by Manara, after all). I just could not look away from this vivid and very disturbing comic.

The Complete Omaha The Cat Dancer, Volume 1

The Complete Omaha The Cat Dancer, Volume 1

I have to admit, I was skeptical at first. A stripper who’s also a cat? Really? Oh yes, really, and it’s a really good read and surprisingly sexy. Omaha The Cat Dancer was, and probably still is, the most banned comic book ever. Apparently, the authorities simply can’t deal with its combination of great art, a coherent, mature story line, and lots of hot sex that has a great deal to do with the plot. What’s the plot, you ask? Well, Omaha, who is a cat, or cat-like in that she has a cute kitty face, cat ears (that go back only when she’s really mad) and a tail (otherwise she has a hot little, very female, human body), is one of the best exotic dancers in town. Things are looking up after she meets the tom cat of her dreams, but alas there’s trouble ahead for poor Omaha. What follows is a story of political corruption and hysterical community leaders “protecting” the public (boy, that sounds awfully familiar to us — check out our blog for more details). I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say that the sex fits perfectly in with the plot and the whole thing was so good I was torn between turning the pages to find out what happens next and drooling over all the hot sex drawn on the page. If you only buy one graphic novel, we strongly recommend this one.

Lambiek on Erotic Comics

Manara / ButterscotchBlowfish has always had a thing for erotic comics. The comic form just allows for so much expression and wild fantasy that you could never do in a movie. Lambiek, an Amsterdam comic store (and one of the coolest ones in the world, be sure to check it out if you are every there) has a great guide to erotic comics. Of course, we’d encourage to shop our selection here at Blowfish and saving on the international shipping charges. (Via Fleshbot.)

Lost Girls Collected

Lost Girls Collected

Most comic book fans have probably heard about Lost Girls Collected, the stunning, three-volume set of hardcover graphic novels by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbe, which debuted to both accolades and controversy last year. The first printing last summer sold out within weeks and is only just now available again. Author Moore (best known for his non-erotic comics, such as Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta) and takes the grown-up versions of Alice (from Alice in Wonderland), Dorothy (from The Wizard of Oz) and Wendy (from Peter Pan) and has them meet at a fancy hotel and reminisce over their sexual awakenings so many years ago, interspersed with some hot sex with one another in their hotel rooms or tucked away behind some shrubbery in the gardens. Y’know, like women sometimes do. The writing is top-notch, the artwork stunningly beautiful and the sex is both erotic and fascinating, especially because these characters are exploring the sexual side of themselves at an age when most of us experienced our own sexual awakenings (teenaged, but not necessarily 18). Definitely one of the most impressive erotic graphic novels out there today. Recommended!
