Silicone Lube and Toys, Again: Lube Interactions
Dear Blowfish,
As a virtual “newbie” to many new exploratory positions, options and objects (converted from “missionary” thanks in part to your podcast!) There are constant warnings not to use silicone Lubes with silicon toys, but we especially love our silicone anal toys and we love how long silicone lubes stay wet. So now the conundrum: Waterless lubes dry out after a while and pure silicone cannot be used with a soft silicone toy . . . is there a golden mix?
The lube debacle is kind of unfortunate. Silicone lubes will last far longer inside the body, but there are a lot of wonderful silicone anal toys out there that shouldn’t be used with silicone lubes. You have a couple of options.
- Dab a small test swipe of your favorite silicone lube over the bottom of the base of your silicone toy. Rub. If the toy is going to react to the silicone lube, it will do so immediately, making a sticky or gummy spot. This is because the silicone molecules are bonding together and hardening. Many high quality lubes and toys are being made so that they don’t bond. This is not a hard and fast rule, but perhaps worth sacrificing a small splotch on the unused base of your toy to find out. If your test swatch is clean, you should be fine to use that lube with your toy in play.
- Put your favorite toy in a condom and use your silicone lube.
- Use an oil based lube for anal play. This won’t react poorly with your silicone toys, but you will want to make sure you aren’t using any latex in the area (the oils will make holes in latex). Also, oil can be great in the butt but not so great in the vagina. Keep it clear of her lady parts.
- Look into some very slippery, long lasting water-based lubes. We really like Liquid Silk and people tell us it stays slippery longer than other water-based lubes they’ve tried. I also find Eros Aqua Formula pretty darn long lasting, but its a runnier lube and some people like their lubes to be thicker for anal.
Alas, play around and see what works for you. We sell many little sample packets of different lubes if you want to try a few without investing tons of cash.
